So many are getting hooked on karting these days. While some find satisfaction by merely watching this sport with family and friends, others really can’t resist the tempting bliss of driving the karts themselves. Karting is done in purpose-built tracks. Some tracks are designed for recreational use while some are strictly for go kart racing.
A recreational or concession go kart track is where the public pays a fee to drive go-karts owned by the facility. In some places, this is called rental tracks. These tracks’ barrier system makes use of the tires and steel which is best to run the track safely and efficiently. The tracks can be indoor or outdoor. Outdoor tracks can offer lower speed go karts for amusement purposes. Typically, these tracks can also be used for traditional go kart racing. Indoor kart tracks are often found in an enclosed space like in abandoned and revamped factories or warehouses and are typically shorter than traditional outside go cart tracks. There are many indoor tracks in large cities in different parts of the world. Many of them offer competitive racing and even leagues.
There are also racing tracks where drivers own and operate their own go carts and compete against each other as a sport in a race. Racetracks have curves, hairpins, straightaways, and slopes which challenge the skills of the drivers. The shape, length, and surface of the track are contingent with the type of racing. Usually, towns have a go kart facility with tracks of various shapes from ovals, road courses to figure 8. Ovals are comprised exclusively for left-hand turns as opposed to racing or road circuits which have left- and right-hand turns. Oval tracks are commonly used but are often criticized for lack of excitement. The average length for a serious racing track for karts is around 1,100 – 1,200 meters, 7 to 9 meters in width. There are several types of track surfaces such as dirt, clay and asphalt.
Short oval or circular dirt or paved tracks are normally preferred for the sprint karting than longer tracks. The shorter tracks used for sprint karting are usually made from materials like asphalt and concrete. There are thousands of spectacular dirt tracks across the world across time but a very few of them stand to be legendary. This includes Ascot Park, Knoxville Raceway, Terre Haute Speedway, Manzanita Speedway, and Eldora Speedway.
