I used to think my computer keeps freezing up for no reason but discovered that exceptions may actually be thrown by the system but simply never making it onto the monitor. In this article I’ll show you how to locate and troubleshoot computer freezes.
Error messages are rarely shown when a PC keeps freezing. The system doesn’t get time to pop-up message before the system hangs. It may however have managed to log specific messages onto the Event Viewer log file (start menu, run program, type in eventvwr). This is the key file for troubleshooting PC freezes.
Go down through the messages in this file and identify those that were thrown in the moments before the PC keeps freezing. Hopefully, they should have error messages and error codes which can be researched on the web. You want to identify specific applications that relate to these error codes so that you can research them directly for signs of updates, known performance issues or user suggestions about configuration tweaks.
If my computer keeps freezing and the event viewer log file does not show any error codes then the issue may be more general. One possible issue could be a lack of free memory on the hard drive. Windows uses the free memory for expanding the paging file (i.e. virtual memory) for processing application and OS commands. The simple solution is to always keep 10% of the hard drive left empty by removing unused software and moving bigger files (i.e. music and videos onto an external hard disk).
Some software utilities that can help troubleshoot more generic issues are virus checkers and registry cleaners. Scan for viruses on the hard disk as it may simply be your PC keeps freezing due to OS file corruption. Likewise, registry cleaners can identify corruption to configuration key settings which cause applications to perform incorrectly (memory issues, exceptions and computer freezes).
