The Different Types of Guitar Strings

One of the most crucial parts of the guitar is their strings. The sound the guitar is going to produce and the quality of that sound depends a lot on the strings we are going to use, how those strings are wound and what is their diameter or gauge.  Different guitar types have different type of strings but the main categorization includes nylon and steel strings.

We can find nylon string with classical guitars. The treble three strings are usually made of nylon and the bass strings are usually made of combination of nylon with copper and bronze. These strings have soft surface, they are great for finger picking and they are also recommended for beginners because they are not so harsh on the fingers. They require less tension. This means that we can easily get the desired tone, there is not much tension to the string for it to produce the sound. The tone they produce is rich, clear and deep. Some of the most distinguished makers of classical guitar strings are: Augustine,  Aquila, Savarez, D’Addario, Conde Hermanos, La Belle, Jose Ramirez and others.

Electric and steel string acoustic guitars basically use steel or metal strings. We have a wide range of string choices for both types of guitar. The steel string acoustic guitar usually uses steel strings wound with bronze or phosphor while electric guitar strings are usually stainless steel, nickel-plated or pure-nickel. The most famous manufacturers of steel strings are Taylor, Ernie Ball, Gibson, Martin, Guild, D’Addario , Elixer and Washburn.

The winding of the guitar strings is very important because it influences quality of the tone a great deal. The three most commonly used varieties of wound strings are round-wound, flat-wound and ribbon-wound.The diameter of the strings is also very important parameter. It is called a gauge and it is measured in inches. The diameter usually ranges from 008 to 013 in and it usually means the thickness of the high E sound according to which other strings are adjusted.
